Introduction: a strong connection between tradition, innovation, and Dutch precision

VDL Hapro and VDL Groep represent one of the most significant examples of successful synergy between technological progress, craftsmanship, and family tradition in European industry. Both brands share a common origin in the Netherlands, a country known for its technological innovation and commitment to sustainability. Hapro, best known for its tanning equipment, relaxation, and travel accessories, is today part of the global industrial group VDL Groep, which unites more than 100 companies across various sectors – from high-tech components to automotive and energy industries.

The beginnings of Hapro

The company Hapro was founded in 1982 in the town of Kapelle in the Zeeland province in the south of the Netherlands. Its goal was to combine comfort, design, and technical expertise to create products that simplify life and bring enjoyment to both movement and relaxation. The company started with the production of home tanning devices that stood out for their elegant design, high-quality materials, and impressive efficiency. These products quickly gained popularity across Europe.

Over time, Hapro expanded its portfolio into the segment of automotive accessories – roof boxes, bike carriers, roof racks, and later also rooftop tents. The combination of design, durability, and aerodynamics made Hapro one of the most trusted brands in the travel accessories sector. Production has always remained based in the Netherlands, ensuring a consistently high level of quality and precision craftsmanship.

Production philosophy and technology

Since its foundation, Hapro has placed strong emphasis on in-house research and development. Thanks to modern manufacturing facilities and technologies such as precision vacuum forming of plastics, the company produces long-lasting, lightweight, and aesthetically refined products.

The production philosophy is built on four key pillars: quality, reliability, design, and durability. Each product undergoes rigorous testing and quality control, and the company works exclusively with renowned European suppliers. Hapro is also known for its environmental responsibility – up to 90% of materials used in production are recycled or sourced from sustainable resources.

Integration into the VDL Groep

In 2000, Hapro became part of the industrial group VDL Groep. This milestone brought new opportunities in development, innovation, and international expansion. Under the name VDL Hapro, the company now produces not only home tanning devices but also professional tanning beds Luxura and Seecret skincare devices.

Through its integration into VDL Groep, Hapro gained access to advanced production technologies, engineering expertise, and a global distribution network. At the same time, it has maintained its design autonomy and strict quality standards. Hapro represents a combination of family heritage and industrial power on a global level.

History of VDL Groep

1953 – The birth of a Dutch industrial legend

VDL Groep was founded in 1953 in Eindhoven under the name Metaalindustrie en Constructiewerkplaats P. van der Leegte. Its founder, Pieter van der Leegte, initially focused on metal components for Philips and DAF Trucks. The company gradually expanded, modernized its production methods, and became the foundation of a family business that later grew into an international industrial group.

1970–1990: A new generation and the first acquisitions

In 1966, the founder’s son Wim van der Leegte joined the company and took over leadership in 1972. His vision was to grow through acquisitions of smaller, technology-driven companies. The first acquisition came in 1979 with the purchase of TIM Hapert. This step laid the groundwork for the group’s current decentralized structure – independent companies united under shared values and strategy.

Wim van der Leegte introduced a management philosophy based on open communication and employee participation, which became a key factor in VDL’s success. The company’s motto, “Strength through cooperation”, remains the guiding principle across the entire VDL Groep.

1990–2010: Expansion into new industries

During the 1990s, VDL expanded into the automotive and transportation industry. In 1993, it acquired DAF Bus International and entered the bus manufacturing segment. Subsequent acquisitions of Berkhof Jonckheere and BOVA made VDL one of Europe’s leading bus producers. In 2006, the acquisition of Philips Enabling Technologies Group (VDL ETG) marked its entry into the high-tech innovation sector.

2010–2020: Automotive production and electrification

In 2012, the group took over the NedCar automotive plant in Born, becoming the only major passenger car manufacturer in the Netherlands. This acquisition strengthened VDL’s position in the European automotive market. The group also began investing in electric buses, charging infrastructure, and energy systems, laying the foundation for its leadership in sustainable mobility.

2016–Present: A new generation and global growth

In 2016, the company leadership passed to the third generation of the Van der Leegte family. Today, VDL Groep operates more than 100 companies in 20 countries and employs over 14,000 people. Its activities are divided into five core domains: Hightech, Mobility, Energy, Infratech, and Foodtech. The group focuses on circular production, sustainable materials, and energy efficiency. In 2024, it announced further expansion of its e-mobility and high-tech divisions across Europe.

The connection between Hapro and VDL Groep

Hapro today operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of VDL Groep. Its production facility in Kapelle perfectly illustrates how modern technology, craftsmanship, and sustainability can coexist. Through its integration with VDL, Hapro benefits from the group’s engineering resources, research capabilities, and global logistics network. The brand maintains its identity focused on premium quality, elegant design, and long-term reliability.
